What is 404 page? 404 page is an error page(s) that not exists from your website and display to your visitors. Here is the definition of 404 error page from Wikipedia:

The 404 or Not Found error message is an HTTP standard response code indicating that the client was able to communicate with the server, but either the server could not find what was requested, or it was configured not to fulfill the request and not reveal the reason why.

For example: You site url is www.InternetOn9.com/articles but someone type in www.InternetOn9.com / articl. Most of the time due to the visitors wrongly type in or spelling your website url address.

Have you wonder how much wasted traffic in your website? One of the way to check how many error page views is to access your cpanel and find out the statistic from your awstats. Look at my another blog - small business blog as example here, there are 2,010 unique visitors came to my site and 3,874 hits (40% of the site traffic) view on 404 page.

It is definitely a waste of your traffic after putting so much effort & resources in generating traffic to your site but end up in errors page, this is something not going to help your conversion into sales.

Let’s look into this, imagine the total of 40% of 2,010 unique visitors just now came to the wrong page and they discover your good offer, instead of the wrong (error) page. Do you think they will buy your offer? The chances are they will or they will not. What if your 404 page is blank? That mean you have no opportunity at all to sell them.

Think about it, this small little page in your site does help you to sell, wouldn’t it is better than spending extra advertising cost to generate more traffic to your website?
